Race: Liuzzi wins again

Vitantonio Liuzzi made it two wins from two with another perfect drive in the second round of F3000 International Championship at Barcelona. The Italian, who drives for Arden, has thus extended his series lead to eight points over poleman Enrico Toccacelo who finished second

Liuzzi made a better start than his fellow countryman and took the lead at the first corner. Toccacelo gave valiant pursuit until the pitstops where he was still within striking distance should the Arden mechanics have slipped up. They didn't.

The BCN Motorsport driver was even closer after the stops, but then Liuzzi simply stepped on it and disappeared.

Surprisingly for a Barcelona F3000 encounter there was an entertaining dice for third between Jeffrey van Hooydonk and Alan van der Merwe. This became a three-way scrap as van Hooydonk, who had passed van der Merwe in the pitstops, then held up the faster South African for several laps allowing Raffaele Giammaria to catch them both up.

Giammaria briefly got past van der Merwe but the reigning British F3 champion wasn't having that and quickly retook the position and resumed his torment of van Hooydonk.

With a couple of laps to go however it ended in tears as van der Merwe clipped van Hooydonk's Coloni Lola and pitched him into the gravel. The South African's Super Nova Lola front wing was wrecked and he was eventually forced to pit dropping him to 12th.

Giammaria thus finished third for AEZ ahead of Esteban Guerrieri who completed a good weekend for Enrico Scalabroni's BCN squad with fifth. Jose Maria Lopes finished ahead of CMS team-mate Mathias Lauda having fought up from the back of the grid.
