Piccini slams 'lunatic' Enge

Andrea Piccini dismissed McLaren junior driver Tomas Enge as a 'lunatic' after yesterday's accident in qualifying for the Silverstone round of the FIA Formula 3000 Championship

Piccini missed the race after his Kid Jensen Racing Lola was damaged in a collision triggered by Enge. The Czech driver spun his car into the pit wall in heavy rain, forcing the closely-following Kevin McGarrity to back off suddenly. Piccini appeared through the spray and hit McGarrity at unabated speed. All three drivers were unhurt.

'Enge was driving like a lunatic,' raged Piccini. 'He spun off the track twice but would not let me by. When we came back onto the pit straight he lost control and spun.

'I was behind McGarrity when he suddenly jumped on the brakes. With all the spray there was nothing I could do and I crashed into the wall.

'The team tried to rebuild the car for the second qualifying session but the differential was damaged and there wasn't enough time to repair it.'
