Perera heads practice 2

Those who believed this weekend's GP2 event around the streets of Monaco would be an ART Grand Prix benefit will have to think again, as DAMS driver Franck Perera just beat ART's Lewis Hamilton to the fastest time in Friday morning's second free practice session

Hamilton's session started badly when he locked up and slid down the escape road at Mirabeau. But he was soon in P1, as he has been for most of the weekend so far.

His 1:21.709 effort looked to have assured him of fastest time, but Perera produced a last-minute flyer that beat him by seven-thousandths of a second.

Hamilton could point to the fact he had to pass a Trident-run car in the Swimming Pool section, and that certainly cost him precious fractions.

Jose Maria Lopez kept up his strong form for Super Nova in third, ahead of the second ART car of Alexandre Premat. Adrian Valles was fifth for Campos Racing, with Gimmi Bruni rounding out the top six for Trident.

With qualifying scheduled to start just thirty minutes after practice ended, crashing was not a good idea. Hiroki Yoshimoto committed the cardinal sin, stuffing his BCN car into the barriers on the exit of the Swimming Pool and removing its right-front corner. The distraught Japanese driver won't be seen in qualifying.

To heap more woe at BCN's door, its second entry for Timo Glock ground to a halt on the track with a mechanical problem. No other teams encountered any problems.
