Hockenheim GP2: Sergey Sirotkin denies Pierre Gasly pole

Renault Formula 1 test driver Sergey Sirotkin took pole for the opening GP2 race at Hockenheim with three minutes remaining in the session

A time of 1m22.193s guaranteed Sirotkin a third pole for ART, as Prema's practice pacesetter Pierre Gasly was already back in the pitlane with five minutes of the session to go, meaning he will start from second on the grid - just 0.016 seconds down.

Raffaele Marciello will line up in third for Russian Time, ahead of Antonio Giovinazzi and Oliver Rowland in fourth and fifth respectively.

Williams F1 development driver Alex Lynn was sixth, but voiced his discontent towards his DAMS team over the radio after he was blocked by traffic during his final run.

In seventh was Norman Nato for Racing Engineering, while Nicholas Latifi was behind him in eighth.

Nato's team-mate Jordan King claimed ninth and German Marvin Kirchhofer rounded out the top 10 for his home race.

Many drivers fell victim to reinforced regulations over track limits throughout the session, with Kirchhofer, Gustav Malja, Luca Ghiotto and Nabil Jeffri all having their qualifying times deleted during the session.
