F3 ace Kovalainen tests for Arden

Finnish ace Heikki Kovalainen made his Formula 3000 debut in a test with the Arden International team at Jerez today

The British Formula 3 race winner, fresh from the Far East tour with Fortec Motorsport, completed his first running in the team's Lola B2/50 at the Spanish circuit this afternoon.

Part of the Renault Driver Development scheme, Kovalainen is considering stepping up to either International F3000 or the Dallara Nissan World Series for next year.

Arden team boss Christian Horner confirmed that Kovalainen is one of seven drivers under consideration for the second seat alongside Swede Bjorn Wirdheim in next year's Formula 1-support championship.

"Heikki's one of several drivers under consideration for next year. He adapted well to the car, and looked really quite good."

Horner dismissed suggestions that if Kovalainen did sign for the team, Arden would take on the Renault Junior team mantle held by Super Nova Racing. "There's been no discussion at all on that subject," added Horner.

Other drivers to be tested in the ran-affected three-day test include Briton Justin Keen, American Derek Hill and Czech driver Jaroslav Janis. Kovalainen will continue running tomorrow morning alongside French Euro F3000 racer Kevin Nadin.
