Barcelona, day 1: Pantano tops

Last year's Formula 3000 International finale winner Giorgio Pantano set the pace for Super Nova on the first day of testing at Barcelona in Spain today (Tuesday)

The Italian, who has yet to confirm his deal for 2002, lapped in 1m29.94s to outpace Ricardo Sperafico (Petrobras), Enrico Toccacelo (Coloni) and Patrick Friesacher (Red Bull).

Tony Schmidt was the surprise package of the day, the German Formula 3 graduate breaking into the top five in testing for the first time this year for the new PSM team.

Estoril pacesetter Tomas Enge was only seventh fastest for Arden, but only used one set of new tyres today. His team-mate Bjorn Wirdheim was ninth fastest, but struck trouble when his fuel pump broke.

The test concludes tomorrow (Wednesday), and the bright, sunny conditions are expected to continue.
