Wickens takes Silverstone Super Pole
Robert Wickens has secured pole position for tomorrow's feature race at Silverstone, after setting a blistering pace on the World Series' first visit to the Northamptonshire venue
The Canadian was the only driver to break into the 1:31 time bracket in qualifying, before setting a lap time of 1:31.582 in the Super Pole session.
Championship leader Giedo van der Garde had been in his customary position at the top of the timesheets in the A group qualifying, but the Dutchman had no answer to the Carlin driver in the Super Pole.
Ultimate-Signature carried both drivers into the Super Pole for the first time this season, where Esteban Guerrieri surpassed himself to finish third fastest. The Argentine is making his debut in the category this year, in place of Brazilian Claudio Cantelli.
Salvador Duran was fourth fastest ahead of Pons driver Marcos Martinez. Spaniard Martinez produced his strongest showing of the year, having earlier finished runner-up in the A group.
For Wickens, who languished in 19th position in the standings entering the weekend, the result marks a turnaround after a run of misfortune.
"I have done 40 laps on the International circuit, but this is my first time on GP track," said Wickens.
"The biggest thing for a driver is being confident, and I hope to start my championship here. We have always been quick, but we have been involved in some unfortunate circumstances."
