Zandvoort 2: Briscoe bites back
Ryan Briscoe steadied his ship in the Formula 3 Euroseries at Zandvoort today (Sunday) by winning the second race of the weekend and extending his championship lead
The Australian made a rocket start from the front row in his Prema Dallara-Opel to outdrag poleman Christian Klien (Mucke Dallara-Mercedes) into Tarzan, leaving Klien to fend off an attack from Olivier Pla (ASM Dallara-Mercedes). The safety car was required when Simon Abadie and Bernhard Auinger clashed on the exit of Tarzan, Abadie's car being sent into the tyrewall where it spun, dug in and flipped over. Fortunately, he was uninjured.
Briscoe made a great restart, and although he and Klien swapped fastest laps in the early stages, Ryan steadily pulled away to record a convincing 6.2sec victory. Pla closed on Klien in the latter stages, but was never close enough to attempt to pass and settled for third.
"The race was pretty much perfect," said Briscoe. "I got a fantastic start, a good restart and I kept pushing throughout. The car was perfect." Klein admitted: "My start was not good, and Ryan's was perfect."
Winkelhock finished fourth, ahead of Alexandre Premat (ASM Dallara-Mercedes) and the distant Fabio Carbone (Signature Dallara-Renault).
