Qualifying, race 2: Kaffer quickest

Pierre Kaffer bounced back from a wretched sequence of results to take pole for Sunday's 16th round of the German Formula 3 Championship at the Nurburgring today (Friday)

The Team Kolles driver, who has dropped to third in the points race, lapped the circuit's short circuit in 1m03.192s to take pole by 0.051secs from Markus Winkelhock. He stayed on top despite a high speed off at the Veedol Chicane, which tore off his front wing in spectacular style.

Championship leader Frank Diefenbacher was third fastest, while his Bertram Schafer Racing team mate Toshihiro Kaneishi, who lies second in the points, could only manage the ninth quickest time.

Britain's Gary Paffett, who lies sixth in the championship, will start from 19th on the grid, one spot ahead of Team Rosberg team mate Laurent Delahaye.

The grid for Saturday afternoon's race will be decided on Saturday morning at 11am.
