Norisring European F3: Hubert and Stroll inherit Ilott's poles

Callum Ilott claimed honours in the second Norisring Formula 3 European Championship qualifying session, but it is Anthoine Hubert and Lance Stroll who receive the two pole positions on offer

Ilott, who has been given a trio of 10-place grid penalties this weekend for an engine change, dominated most of the last 10 minutes, the Van Amersfoort Racing man setting two laps quicker than the best anyone else could manage.

His VAR team-mate Hubert and Prema Powerteam man Stroll set identical laps 0.087 seconds slower than the Briton's best, but Frenchman Hubert set his time first, netting the Formula Renault 2.0 graduate his maiden F3 pole for race two.

On second-best times, series leader Stroll edged out Hubert by 0.020s and the Williams Formula 1 team protege will therefore start Sunday's finale from his second pole of the weekend.

Stroll, his Prema team-mates and the Motopark squadron were among those who pitted for new tyres, while VAR's drivers stayed out on the same set.

Motopark's Red Bull Junior Sergio Sette Camara starts race two from third on the grid, his time equalled exactly by Prema's Maximilian Gunther, the pair just 0.014s away from Hubert and Stroll.

The third row for race two is taken by Mikkel Jensen (Mucke Motorsport) and Motopark-run Ferrari prospect Guan Yu Zhou.

On second-best times, Zhou moves up to third on the grid for race three, ahead of Gunther, Sette Camara and Jensen.

The Motopark car of Joel Eriksson and Hitech GP's George Russell are on the fourth row of the grid for race two, with Russell duplicating his eighth place for race three and Eriksson dropping to 10th.

Rounding out the top 10 for race two are David Beckmann (Mucke) and Red Bull's Niko Kari (Motopark), who are seventh and ninth respectively for the third race.

It was a disastrous session for Prema's early-season championship leader Nick Cassidy, the New Zealander suffering gearbox problems and ending up 19th of the 20-car field.
