George Russell loses Hungaroring European F3 pole over track limits
George Russell has lost his pole position for the first Formula 3 European Championship race at the Hungaroring after his best time was retrospectively deleted for a track-limits offence
Russell, who had taken pole position by 0.018 seconds from Maximilian Gunther, now has to rely on his second-best lap, which puts him second on the grid, 0.080s behind the German.
The decision surprised some in the paddock, as track-limits time deletions are usually handed out instantly rather than retrospectively. But it is understood that the sheer weight of offences - there were 40 times deleted in total - meant that they could not be processed quickly enough.
Russell was not the only one to suffer in this way, with Guan Yu Zhou and Peter Li also having their fastest laps taken away after the session had finished.
Ben Barnicoat and Arjun Maini were the others whose fastest laps were deleted, although this was during the session.
Of the 20 competitors, Harrison Newey had the highest total of laps deleted with six, while Lance Stroll, Callum Ilott and Niko Kari were the only drivers not to have laps taken away.
