Calado quickest in practice

For the third week in succession James Calado set the pace in British Formula 3 free practice, this time ahead of three races at Silverstone this weekend

The Racing Steps Foundation driver was the only man to lap below 1m40s in the dry first session and also led the way before rain washed out the second session.

The Carlin man's 1m39.760s best lap of the Silverstone Bridge (nee Grand Prix) circuit put him 0.676 seconds clear of team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne in their Dallara-Volkswagens. Red flags for various stoppages hindered the French Red Bull Junior and championship leader's best laps, and he was one of only five drivers to set his best time in the later session.

Raikkonen Robertson Racing continued the strong form it has shown since ditching a complicated damper system before Rockingham that hurt its pace earlier in this season. Reigning Formula BMW Europe champion Felipe Nasr and Colombian Carlos Huertas managed third and fourth quickest times respectively to be the leading Mercedes runners, just 0.017s separating them.

Fortec pairing Oli Webb and Daniel McKenzie rounded out the top six, nine tenths adrift of the pace. Carlin's Jazeman Jaafar and Adriano Buzaid sandwiched Hitech's Gabriel Dias in seventh and ninth, while Raikkonen Robertson's Daisuke Nakajima, who endured a torrid time at Thruxton last weekend but has scored the best results of his F3 career here at Silverstone, completed the top 10.

T-Sport's Menasheh Idafar outpaced his National Class championship rival and team-mate James Cole by 0.340s and set 13th fastest time overall, a tenth and a half clear of International Class team-mate Alex Brundle.
