Adria qual 2: Rosberg's first F3 pole
Nico Rosberg, the son of former world champion Keke, set pole position for Sunday's fourth round of the Formula 3 Euroseries at Adria in Italy
In almost sub-tropical weather conditions, Rosberg lapped his Team Rosberg Dallara-Opel in 1m10.345s, just over six-hundredths clear of series leader Ryan Briscoe (PREMA Dallara-Opel). Double Hockenheim polesitter Olivier Pla (ASM Dallara-Mercedes) was third fastest, ahead of the impressive Alexandros Margaritis (MB Racing Dallara-Opel).
Rosberg, an F3 rookie this year, said: "I did not expect to be on the pole position so quickly. My father told me, if you are in the top 10, it will be very nice. So for me this result is just fantastic. And above all I do not have much experience in motorsport, so being on my first F3 pole is just great."
The session was not without its controversy, however. Due to many drivers setting fastest times during a yellow flag period, the times were initially issued with the final few minutes of the session declared not valid. This decision was reversed on Saturday morning and seriously affected Markus Winkelhock (Mucke Dallara-Merc), who dropped from fourth to fifth, Pla's team-mate Alexandre Premat fell from fifth to eighth, and Briscoe's partner Katsuyuki Hiranaka tumbled from sixth to 11th.
