Austrian Alexander Wurz was delighted on Saturday to take fifth place on the grid for Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix - his best ever qualifying position.
"I'm very happy with fifth place," said Wurz, who will leave Benetton after the race to join McLaren as a test driver.
"To qualify right behind the McLarens and Ferraris is really pole position for me.
"I'm very happy that I've achieved this in my last qualifying session with the team and I hope this helps put paid to rumours that have followed me this year.
"I want to thank the people who work with me and who have supported me for the last three years in the team."
Wurz has been criticised this season after scoring just two points. His teammate Giancarlo Fisichella has scored 18.
Benetton team chief Flavio Briatore said: "I'm very happy with Alex. In the last part of the season he has done a very good job and he has now exceeded expectations and put us in a strong position for the race."
