Webber dismisses criticism

Mark Webber has defended his actions in not letting race leader Michael Schumacher through in Turn 1 when the Australian pitted out after his final stop in the European Grand Prix

"I don't know what was going on there," Schumacher said, "I went past him and he must have seen what car was in front of him and as I was turning in, suddenly, very late, I saw him flying into me. I was really shocked. Fortunately I could open the door.

"If it had not been for just this little moment of me seeing him, he would have crashed into me. I don't know what was going through his head, what he was trying to achieve there, but it was a bit of a moment."

Webber retorted: "I would do it again tomorrow. I was faster than him at the time, I left the pits on new tyres and pulled away, to start with, from him. I was racing Fisichella and knew Giancarlo was pitting on that lap and I might be able to leapfrog him. I could see Michael coming. I thought: if he brakes around the outside it's his corner, but if he brakes inside, I am going in there.

"I wasn't going to back off for two seconds and then sit behind him on my new tyres. I wanted to get in and out of the corner and knew that even if I got a little in his way, he would still punch in a good time. He might lose two or three tenths, but not much. I couldn't afford to lose two seconds on the out lap.

"He was clearly pissed off. When he came past and went mental at me out of the cockpit, I went on the radio and said: "What's that all about?" I was doing what was best for my team and me at the time. It didn't cost him a huge amount anyway. I don't know what all the fuss is about."
