Valencia 2: Montoya's record

Williams ace Juan Pablo Montoya set a new unofficial track record on the second day of Formula 1 testing at Valencia today (Wednesday), eclipsing the previous mark set late last month by the team's test driver Antonio Pizzonia

The Colombian lapped the Spanish track in 1m09.103s, shading Pizzonia's record of 1m09.123s by 0.020s. Montoya, who completed 85 laps, was conducting set-up work on his FW26.

Jenson Button set the second fastest time in his BAR-Honda 006, with a time 0.364s slower than Montoya's best. However, while the top two drivers have been frequent visitors to the head of the timesheets during winter testing, the appearance of Christian Klien in third position will certainly raise some eyebrows.

The Austrian rookie set an impressive time of 1m09.514s, but perhaps more importantly completed 110 trouble-free laps in his Jaguar R5. Mark Webber also put in a strong day of testing for the team, completing a massive 144 laps and setting the fifth fastest time.

"It was a very good day," enthused Webber. "We did lots of work on the set-up, traction control, starts and weight distribution - all these things we wanted to do before we managed to do with no problems at all today."

Takuma Sato was sandwiched by the two Jag's in fourth, with BAR test driver Anthony Davidson down in eighth. Williams tester Marc Gene spent the day conducting systems work, and set the fifth fastest time.

Once again, McLaren appeared to struggle for pace against the competition, with Kimi Raikkonen sixth fastest and David Coulthard 10th. Both drivers worked on a race simulation programme, although neither escaped without problems. Raikkonen's testing was disrupted by a fire during a pit stop, while Coulthard found his running cut short by an engine failure.

Toyota has two cars running. Cristiano da Matta continued to fine-tune the set-up of the TF104, while Ricardo Zonta conducted 'experimental' mechanical work.
