Italian Jarno Trulli topped the times in today's testing session at Monaco but blotted his copybook when he became the first man to hit the barriers just 90 minutes into the Grand Prix weekend.
Trulli, who damaged his Renault when he hit the armco at the Grand Hotel hairpin, finished with a time of 1:16.888 to lead the session by 0.760 seconds ahead of countryman Giancarlo Fisichella.
Fisichella, in the Jordan, finished a further seven tenths of a second ahead of third-placed Mark Webber in his Jaguar machine, which has had the white Jaguar on its engine cover replaced by a pink one because of a sponsorship link-up.
Scottish test driver Allan McNish finished 1.550 seconds off the pace in the second Renault but was two tenths faster than Spanish race driver Fernando Alonso, who finished fifth.
Ralph Firman, preparing for his first Monaco Grand Prix, finished in sixth place for Jordan but was almost two seconds off the pace and went straight on at Sainte Devote twice during the session.
Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia, also a Monaco Grand Prix rookie, finished seventh after stopping out on the circuit early in the session. Webber also parked his Jaguar up at turn one late in the session.
The two Minardis were once again at the back of the grid, with Briton Justin Wilson eighth having beaten his ninth-placed Dutch teammate Jos Verstappen by just 0.055 seconds.
Several of the drivers took the chance to continue on around the track after the session following an agreement by the FIA to allow any driver taking the chequered flag after any session to run an extra lap with a practice start.
