Toyota believe this month's German Grand Prix could mark the start of their long-awaited march up the Formula One grid.
The Cologne-based team are due to introduce a heavily-revised car at the race in Hockenheim on July 25 after a disappointing season so far.
"From where we are, we are not going to move all the way to the front in one step. But this is the start of the process," technical director Mike Gascoyne told a British Grand Prix news conference on Friday.
"We've been doing a lot of work. We think it's a good step forward," he added. "It's been very tight to produce it on time...plus (it's) a total new aero package, so a lot of hard work. And hopefully it will be a reasonable step forward.
"We have put a lot of things right at the factory, done a lot of hard work that you don't see on the race track. We've been doing all that," said Gascoyne.
"It's taken a long time and now we are starting to see the results of all that work but it's just the first step of what will be a long process but one that we're trying to do as quickly as we can."
Toyota came into Formula One in 2002, finishing 10th in their first season and eighth last year. They are currently seventh after 10 races.
