Suzuki says team exceeded expectations

Super Aguri team principal Aguri Suzuki has admitted the Japanese squad have exceeded his expectations at the start of the season

The Japanese outfit made their Grand Prix debut in Bahrain after their late entry was accepted by the FIA and the rest of the teams.

Super Aguri are currently using a 2002 Arrows chassis, revised and upgraded to meet this year's regulations, powered by a Honda engine.

Despite their outdated package, Takuma Sato has finished all three races so far this season, while his rookie teammate Yuji Ide finished in Australia after two retirements in Bahrain and Malaysia.

And while Suzuki says that the team are not aiming to be competitive yet, the team boss admitted their performance has been better than expected.

"I am not concentrating on being competitive at this point," Suzuki said. "The main thing for the team now is to learn from each race and complete every session. The team has been doing so well and the results have been better than I expected."

Super Aguri have planned upgrades for their current car, before they introduce a new machine, but Suzuki says that, although he expects stronger performances, the good results will not come any time soon.

"It would be very hard to get a good result in the race but we will be more competitive as the season progresses," he said. "Everything will be step by step but we will move forward for sure.

"I hope people will support us and look at us in a long-term perspective."

The former Grand Prix driver also admitted he is still to enjoy his new job.

"I haven't reached the point of enjoying my position yet but I feel the big responsibility of being team principal and in leading the team in the right direction," Suzuki added.
