Stewart Hits Back at BRDC Members

Former World Champion Jackie Stewart has accused certain members of the British Racing Drivers' Club of acting 'unethically' as he fights to keep hold of his position as president of the club

As Autosport-Atlas exclusively revealed this week, Stewart is facing having to convince members that he is the right man to stay in charge of the club at an Extraordinary General Meeting that has been called to discuss his future.

It was called after an unofficial poll of club members voted overwhelmingly that they believed he should step down from his position and be removed from the board of the BRDC.

After refusing to accept pressure from the club to stand down and instead vow to fight for his position, Stewart has now publicly said that he believes certain members of the BRDC are playing dirty tricks to try and oust him.

"I have been asked to do that (step down) by co-ordinators of an incredibly badly worded straw poll sent to a certain number of people," Stewart was quoted as saying in The Independent newspaper on Saturday.

"Actually, as president I stand for membership election every year. What they really want is for the president not to be a board member, and that has been in the club's rules for 76 years.

"I think there is dirty work going on at the crossroads, a lot of it in my opinion unethical, but if I am asked by the members to stand down, then of course I will. But until then I have no intention of changing my role within the club."

The EGM is likely to be held later this month, with Stewart having made it clear to the club that he will use the media and every public avenue possible to further his cause.
