Stewart clinches fourth in constructors'
Stewart lost the battle but won the war as it knocked Williams out of the top four in the constructors' championship for only the third time in two decades
Johnny Herbert and Rubens Barrichello finished seventh and eighth in the Japanese Grand Prix, just outside the points as Ralf Schumacher's impressive season continued with his 11th points finish in 16 races.
But two points from his fifth place was just not enough to overhaul Stewart in fourth, racing in tartan colours for the last time.
Two more and it would have been up in fourth.
As it is the nine-time champions end the season fifth on 35 points, just one behind Stewart.
'Johnny was poised to pick up a point by staying ahead of Alesi at the second pit stop, unfortunately it didn't work out as we planned,' said team boss Paul Stewart.
'But the most important goal was to secure fourth place in the constructors' - which we did.
'To do that in only our third year is quit outstanding and it makes me immensely proud.'
Herbert caught the team out when he pitted suddenly, tucked behind an Arrows and caught the mechanics unawares.
'The time I lost put me behind Alesi and he rejoined in front of me. It was frustrating but at last we held onto fourth,' said the winner of the European Grand Prix.
'We have laid solid foundations for a good step forward as Jaguar Racing next year.'
Barrichello said: 'I leave with nothing but sweet memories of the team and I have to thank them for the belief they have shown to me.'
