Speed set for Red Bull test

Rising American star Scott Speed has openly admitted for the first time that he will likely get a Formula 1 test with Red Bull Racing (RBR) next year as he gears up for an assault on the new GP2 category

Speed is part of the Red Bull Driver Search programme to help promote an American driver to F1, and has made a big impression in Europe this year when he won the German and Eurocup Formula Renault titles.

After a disappointing time in British F3 in 2003 caused by medical problems, Speed is unlikely to make a return to that category and has instead set his sights on moving up to GP2, before possibly making the jump to F1 with RBR in 2006.

And although Speed has been linked with an RBR test before, this week he admitted for the first time that there was a serious possibility of a run happening.

"My plans have yet to be decided," said Speed. "But GP2 is looking like the biggest possibility. And, along with that, I am sure that I will be testing the Red Bull F1 car and getting ready for 2006. But I don't know anything for sure yet."

Speed recently tested for the Red Bull-backed Cheever Indy Racing League team at Sebring, although it appears that he does not want to make the switch to the American oval-based series just yet.
