Spa wants race-share with Nurburgring

With this weekend's race at Spa expected to lose the organisers around three million Euro, Etienne Davignon, president of the race organisers, said on Sunday that efforts were now being made with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone to renegotiate their deal.

Although the Belgian GP has a contract to hold the race until 2012, Davignon said all options were being considered to try and keep the event on the calendar in the long term - even if it meant missing some years.

"The discussion with Mr Ecclestone is based on the fact that we believe we are running a too high deficit and that we have to try and accommodate that," said Davignon.

"If by having alternates with another race here, and a joint promotion for the public with, for example, the Nurburgring, then we will get more income. That will go against the loss and that is the hypothesis we are looking at, and Mr Ecclestone has said he is willing to look at it."

Davignon said it was too early to state when the race-share deal with the Nurburgring would start. "It depends on the negotiations we have," he explained.
