Silverstone revamp vote delayed

Plans to revamp the Silverstone circuit have hit a snag after the British Racing Drivers' Club postponed the approval of two resolutions which would allow the track to be revised and leased

BRDC president Jackie Stewart had pleaded to club members to approve the appointment of developers St. Modwen Properties to head the refurbishing project, but an Extraordinary General Meeting was called to gain their approval as the board was unwilling to sign a contract with St. Modwen without the backing of the members.

BRDC members were also expected to vote on plans to lease the circuit to Northern Racing, the preferred candidates to take over the running of Silverstone for a period of 25 years.

As predicted by autosport.com earlier, however, hopes that approval would be easily gained were dashed on Wednesday, when the board decided to postpone the decision.

"Members need more information and a longer period of consultation before we put the two resolutions to a vote," said Stewart. "We are confident that taking on board all the opinions and strongly held views at today's EGM we can proceed with our strategic plans for the development of Silverstone.

"However, the Board accepts and supports that Members need an additional period for briefing and consultation and we were happy to accept the strong view of the Meeting. St Modwen and Northern Racing are fully in support of today's decision."
