Schuey favourite, but what about Alesi?

Jean Alesi makes his Formula 1 debut for Jordan at this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix and the thought of the fiery Frenchman back fighting at the sharper end of the grid will strike a chord in the imagination of F1 fans everywhere. But bookies are a little less enthusiastic about Alesi's chances and don't expect him to disrupt the recent natural order of things on Sunday

Alesi's odds have tumbled since his switch from Prost to Jordan - he's still very much an outside shot though, at 80-1 to win Sunday's race. But he was 150-1 to win his last race for Prost at Hockenheim three weeks ago. Punters might prefer to back him for a podium place - British bookmaker Ladbrokes has him at 18-1 to finish third or higher, and he's 5-2 to get into the points.

But Michael Schumacher is the hot favourite in Hungary, with the Ferrari star even money to take pole on Saturday and 11-8 to stand on the top step of the podium on Sunday afternoon. Either way the German is likely to come away with his fourth world title.

In recent Grands Prix, the Williams cars have been challenging for wins, but the team is expected to struggle in Hungary, as its Michelin tyres and BMW engine are reckoned not to be as suited to the slow, twisty Hungaroring.

The McLarens, however, might be a better option. Mika Hakkinen is 7-2 to take pole, while team mate David Coulthard is 9-2. On race day, both drivers are 5-1 to win. And if you reckon on a McLaren one-two, you'll get 10-1.

The Hungaroring is a high downforce circuit and has been described as 'Monaco without the barriers', so looking at the results of this year's race in the Principality could offer clues for other possible money earners.

Eddie Irvine scored a podium in Monaco and although Hungary hasn't quite got the same car-breaking reputation as Monaco, the Ulsterman's Jaguar was on the pace for most of the Monaco weekend. He put his car sixth on the grid in qualifying, which was his best qualifying session this year. Irvine is 18-1 to get on the podium in Hungary and 7-2 to finish in the points.
