Sauber Baffled by Lack of Speed

The Sauber team were left baffled by their lack of pace in today's qualifying for the German Grand Prix after having shone in practice

Brazilian driver Felipe Massa, seventh fastest in Friday's practice, was the quickest of the Sauber duo, but finished down in a disappointing 13th place.

Massa, who was aiming for a strong result after practice, was left baffled by the handling of his car.

"I had a bad lap today," admitted Massa. "The car had a bit of understeer this morning, but otherwise it was okay. But straight away this afternoon it was oversteering. The track temperature had gone up a little but that really doesn't explain why the car changed so much.

"It can't change like that. It's very disappointing, after the way we were going yesterday and this morning."

Teammate Jacques Villeneuve was 14th quickest after he suffered from brake problems during his flying lap.

"My only problem came after the first sector, when I started trying to brake hard," he said. "The moment I touched the pedal the front wheels just locked, and I wasn't even being aggressive.

"After that I had to go a little easier on the pedal to avoid that, which cost me some time. It was frustrating, but it should be okay in the race once things have warmed up thoroughly after a couple of laps."
