Saturday Second Free Practice - Italian GP

Juan Pablo Montoya outpaced World Championship rival Michael Schumacher as the pair claimed the top two times in the final practice session for the Italian Grand Prix on Saturday.

Juan Pablo Montoya outpaced World Championship rival Michael Schumacher as the pair claimed the top two times in the final practice session for the Italian Grand Prix on Saturday.

Williams-BMW driver Montoya, of Colombia, set a time of 1:21.468 to finish just 0.118 seconds ahead of German Schumacher as the cloudy skies cleared and the track temperatures rose to 30 degrees.

Marc Gene, replacing Ralf Schumacher in the second Williams, prevented Finn Kimi Raikkonen, of McLaren-Mercedes, from ensuring the three title contenders were the top three finishers in the session when he jumped to third with a late run.

Williams test driver Gene finished 0.460 seconds behind session-leading teammate Montoya as he completed his second session after being handed the drive when Schumacher was deemed unfit to continue on Saturday morning.

Raikkonen was a further two tenths slower with Brazilian Rubens Barrichello, in the second Ferrari, and Scot David Coulthard, in the second McLaren, finishing fifth and sixth.

Olivier Panis caused the session to be interrupted with just three minutes to go when the engine in his Toyota expired and dropped oil over a high-speed part of the circuit.

Frenchman Panis still finished seventh, the fastest driver outside the top three teams. He headed Italian Jarno Trulli and Spaniard Fernando Alonso, eighth and tenth respectively for Renault, and Briton Jenson Button in ninth for BAR-Honda.
