Saturday Second Free Practice - German GP

Briton Jenson Button finished the final practice session for Sunday's German Grand Prix in top spot as World Champion Michael Schumacher slumped to seventh in cool conditions at Hockenheim on Saturday morning.

Briton Jenson Button finished the final practice session for Sunday's German Grand Prix in top spot as World Champion Michael Schumacher slumped to seventh in cool conditions at Hockenheim on Saturday morning.

Button, who is aiming for a return to the podium after finishing the last two races outside the top three, set a late time of 1:13.676 to push past second-placed Williams-BMW driver Juan Pablo Montoya.

Scot David Coulthard, who was baffled by an ill handling McLaren-Mercedes car on Friday, appeared to have solved his problems as he made it three different teams in the top three.

He led Finnish teammate Kimi Raikkonen, who finished fourth, and Spaniard Fernando Alonso, who finished fifth in the lead Renault. Brazilian Rubens Barrichello was the fastest Ferrari driver in sixth.

Italian Jarno Trulli was eighth, just behind Schumacher, in the second Renault with Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia, who was watched from the garage by the man he is replacing, the injured Ralf Schumacher, in ninth.

Brazilian Cristiano da Matta finished tenth in the new Toyota, which had not been tested until Friday's practice sessions, and his French teammate Olivier Panis was just behind him in 11th place.

After a first session full of incident the second proved the opposite with Schumacher the only driver to make a mistake when he pushed too hard and spun his Ferrari at turn 12.

Japanese driver Takuma Sato, of BAR-Honda, and Italian Giorgio Pantano, of Jordan, both failed to make it out on track for the session after damaging their cars in the earlier 45-minute run.
