Saturday Second Free Practice - European GP

German Ralf Schumacher topped the times for Williams-BMW in the second half of Saturday morning practice for the European Grand Prix, but he failed to beat the time set by Toyota driver Olivier Panis in the first 45-minute session.

German Ralf Schumacher topped the times for Williams-BMW in the second half of Saturday morning practice for the European Grand Prix, but he failed to beat the time set by Toyota driver Olivier Panis in the first 45-minute session.

The session, which normally ends with a combined timesheet from both halves, was deemed to be two separate sessions of 45-minute duration in a bizarre move by the race organisers due to requests from the teams and the race director.

Schumacher led a Williams-BMW one-two in what was deemed the second session with a time of 1:31.305 to finish 0.061 seconds ahead of Colombian teammate Juan Pablo Montoya.

Panis's best lap in the second session was still good enough for him to claim third place, 0.185 seconds behind the lead Williams with McLaren pair Scot David Coulthard and Finn Kimi Raikkonen fourth and fifth.

The second Toyota of Brazilian Cristiano da Matta was sixth, continuing the Cologne-based team's promising form at their home track, with the Renault pairing of Italian Jarno Trulli and Spaniard Fernando Alonso seventh and eighth.

In what was virtually a team-by-team formation timesheet the Ferrari duo of world champion Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello finished ninth and tenth.

The only incidents of note came when Barrichello went off track at turn seven 12 minutes into the session and Australian Mark Webber was forced to walk back to the pits when his Jaguar stopped out on track at turn 15 ten minutes later.
