Saturday Second Free Practice - British GP

Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya prevented a Ferrari redwash at Silverstone in the second practice session ahead of Saturday's qualifying for the British Grand Prix when he topped the times for Williams-BMW.

Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya prevented a Ferrari redwash at Silverstone in the second practice session ahead of Saturday's qualifying for the British Grand Prix when he topped the times for Williams-BMW.

Montoya, who is desperate to close the six-point gap on teammate Ralf Schumacher this weekend as Williams continue to close in on Ferrari in the title race, set a lap time of 1:21.415.

He finished 0.172 seconds faster than Brazilian Rubens Barrichello, who was once again the faster of the two Ferraris albeit only just as he outpaced teammate Michael Schumacher by 0.021 seconds.

Schumacher lost control of his Ferrari after setting the fastest lap of the session earlier when he headed into Copse corner but he skitted across the gravel and returned to the track without damage.

German Ralf Schumacher ensured it was a Williams and Ferrari top four by finishing just 0.296 seconds behind Montoya while Frenchman Olivier Panis finished fifth for Toyota ahead of Scot David Coulthard's McLaren-Mercedes.

Coulthard's teammate Finn Kimi Raikkonen could only manage eighth between Renault drivers Italian Jarno Trulli, in seventh, and Spaniard Fernando Alonso, in ninth, with Toyota's Cristiano da Matta, of Brazil, completing the top ten.

Italian Giancarlo Fisichella had an exciting moment when he spun his Jordan a full 360 degrees as he exited Stowe corner but he recovered to continue his running.

Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia, however, was not so fortunate as his Jaguar stopped at the end of the pitlane and was pushed back to the garage while Canadian Jacques Villeneuve suffered his second Honda engine blow-up in two sessions.
