Saturday First Free Practice - Italian GP

Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya set the fastest time in Saturday's first practice session for the Italian Grand Prix as world champion Michael Schumacher finished down in sixth position.

Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya set the fastest time in Saturday's first practice session for the Italian Grand Prix as world champion Michael Schumacher finished down in sixth position.

Williams-BMW driver Montoya set a time of 1:21.700, still slower than Schumacher's fastest time from Friday practice, to put himself five thousandths of a second ahead of Spanish Renault driver Fernando Alonso.

The top ten cars were covered by little more than half a second, with Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia making it a one-three for Williams ahead of compatriot Rubens Barrichello in the lead Ferrari.

Japanese driver Takuma Sato finished fifth fastest for BAR-Honda with his British team-mate Jenson Button down in eight, one place behind the McLaren-Mercedes of Kimi Raikkonen, who was fastest in Friday's second practice session.

Scot David Coulthard finished ninth in the second McLaren while Brazilian Felipe Massa, in the lead Sauber, finished in tenth place, just ahead of his team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella, the fastest Italian driver.

The session began under cloudy skies but in temperatures of 22 degrees Celsius and Australian Mark Webber, of Jaguar, headed the times with 20 minutes to go before Barrichello bettered his time by eight tenths of a second.

The Brazilian driver immediately bettered his time by another eight tenths of a second on his second flying lap lap to move one-and-a-half seconds clear at the front but his time was bettered later in the session.

Schumacher, who is chasing his 13th win of the season this weekend at Monza, was hampered by traffic late in the session and was baulked by two cars as he tried to set a fastest lap to move himself up the order.
