Juan Pablo Montoya topped the times in Saturday's first practice session for the German Grand Prix as Williams-BMW and Ferrari set the pace to secure the top four places.

Colombian Montoya set a time of 1:15.668 to finish 0.185 seconds ahead of Brazilian Rubens Barrichello with Ralf Schumacher and Michael Schumacher, in the second Williams and Ferrari machines, third and fourth respectively.

Montoya was left with a long trip back to the pits after the session, however, after his car stopped on the track at turn 11 after the chequered flag had been waved.

Finn Kimi Raikkonen finished fifth in the leading McLaren, his Scottish teammate David Coulthard ending up down in 11th place. The Renault pair of Italian Jarno Trulli and Spaniard Fernando Alonso were sixth and seventh.

Frenchman Olivier Panis, of Toyota, finished eighth with Australian Mark Webber, in the Jaguar, ninth and Briton Jenson Button completing the top ten in his BAR-Honda.

Briton Justin Wilson, making his debut for Jaguar, finished down in 17th place, 1.2 seconds behind his new teammate Webber, while Formula One debutant Dane Nicolas Kiesa finished last, more than four seconds off the pace but three tenths behind experienced Minardi teammate Jos Verstappen.
