McLaren's slim hopes of winning either the drivers' or constructors' titles this year came to an end in Hungary. David Coulthard finished third, while Mika Hakkinen put in a very strong drive that deserved more than the fifth place it earned, after he lost a great deal of time stuck behind the Jordan of Jarno Trulli. The team tried a bizarre strategy to get him ahead of Ralf Schumacher - Mika's first stop came half way through and he managed to squeeze in two more before the finish - but in the end the bold move didn't gain or cost anything. The titles may be gone, but the team intends to push hard for the rest of the season, not least because second place is under threat in both championships. Adam Cooper spoke to Ron Dennis after the flag



"Michael deserved to win, and we recognise that. We made it a little bit easier for him than we would have liked, but that's motor racing. We've had performance drops in the past, they're going to happen again in the future, as with all teams. The important thing is to learn from your mistakes, but put them behind you and move forward, and to get the best out of the rest of the season and do the best preparation that we can do for 2002. Overall it's not about this race, it's about all the races. They've done a better job. It was a well-earned World Championship."



"No, I think the only difference between David and Rubens was the circuit conditions down to the first corner. It was pretty dusty, with no rubber on it, so it probably lacked a little bit of traction."



"I don't think it's a question of speed. Mika showed how quick the cars could be, and it wasn't particularly surprising that we had a better race performance than qualifying. It's been the same all year. This is a race that is pretty much the same as at Monte Carlo. Where you qualify is where you finish, unless someone makes a mistake or has mechanical problems. At the end of the day we weren't surprised by the outcome. It could have been better - we outfoxed Ferrari on the first stop, and then a fumbled pit stop gave the second place back to them. But at the end of the day second wouldn't have done the job."



"A little bit of a stuck nozzle cost us about 1.5 seconds, and that was enough to give the second place back to Barrichello."



"Mika did a sensational race from a performance standpoint. We calculated that we weren't going to overtake Ralf in an equal situation. We had about 1.5s more pace, and then we decided why don't we make it 2.5s more pace? So we short-filled him to see if a car that was actually that much faster could get past. And you saw the answer - the answer is no! No matter how quick you are round here. This is a circuit devoid of overtaking. It was quite deliberate. We had such a lead over the sixth place car that it was a gamble that was worth taking, so it was what we did."



"It's probably yet to come, I hope! Silverstone was good, but there'll be other races this year. Both of them are very highly motivated to win, so it's not over."



"We want to try and win each and every race, and that's what we're going to concentrate on. We started on 2002 months ago."



"You should never be able to reflect and say you could have done a better job. That's the worst condition to be in, and I don't think we can try any harder than we tried. We're a pretty deep company, and we've got plenty of engineering and design capability, so I don't think we've lost any pace on any car. We'll try a bit harder maybe, and maybe Adrian won't come to the last couple of Grands Prix or something like that, but other than that we want to win the remaining races and then try and raise our game for next season."
