Ricardo Zonta Q&A

Ricardo Zonta got a welcome surprise in Montreal when he was asked to step in and replace Heinz-Harald Frentzen at Jordan. Despite missing Friday's practice, he acquitted himself well, and without brake problems on race day he would have finished higher than the seventh place he eventually secured. Curiously his appearance meant that the Brazilian city of Curitiba (Pop: 1.3m) had three representatives in the race, as Ricardo joined Enrique Bernoldi and Tarso Marques on the grid for the first time! At the time of writing it seems that Frentzen will return to the cockpit at the Nurburgring, but Zonta will be on standby. Adam Cooper spoke to him

"Yes, it was a big surprise, because I knew only on Friday evening. The next day it was very exciting, so it was very important to be concentrated on my job."

"On Friday you test the car a lot for the race, and you get confidence on the corners to be fast in qualifying. If you go straight into qualifying you never know how hard you can push, and also you don't want to make any mistakes, because you are learning everything on Saturday."

"Yeah, I lost some time with that spin, and it would have been very useful for qualifying. I didn't push very hard before, and I made a mistake."

"At the beginning it was very good, until the first pit stop. Then we had a problem with the brakes, and when I came back from the pits it was worse, the front brakes were finished and I couldn't push hard any more. We put all the balance to the rear, and every time I touched the brakes it would lock the rears."

"Yeah, it was fine, and it was fun as well. I was easy on the brakes at that time already, but after the pit stop I was very unlucky and we couldn't finish in the points. When I came back to the track with the new tyres, for one lap the car was very good, and after that the brakes were finished."

"Oh yes. Now I can see the decision was better to come here. But it's very hard. I missed the races, and every Grand Prix I was coming too, it was very hard just to watch."

"I think for next year I need to come back to racing. It's too early to say something about next year, but we must find a place to go."

"Yes, now there are a lot of drivers from Brazil!"
