Renault's tech chief targets Williams

Buoyed by its recent success, Renault is targeting Williams in a bid to lift itself into third place in the 2003 Formula 1 Constructors Championship. Mike Gascoyne, the team's technical director, believes that they have the car, the team and drivers to do it, if they can only make progress in the engine department

"We are third at the moment, level with Ferrari, and we've got to scrap it out with Williams," he said. "I think that there are tracks where we can do that." Gascoyne admits that McLaren and Ferrari have a significant edge over the rest of the field, but knows that consistent finishing pays dividends. "We've got to take the good results, get two cars to the finish every time, and then we can be up there at the end of the season.

"If we can make good progress with the engine, it is going to stand us in good stead," he added.

According to AUTOSPORT magazine, the French team benefited from a 10bhp boost in Malaysia and there could be as much as an extra 40bhp on the way in time for Monaco. Precise figures are as rare as hen's teeth but this would leave the Renault an estimated 50bhp short of the top teams.
