Reitzle: Jaguar fix isn't just technical
Jaguar Cars chairman Wolfgang Reitzle says that the improved performance of its Formula 1 squad in Monaco was as much due to fixing its management shortcomings as curing its technical problems
Speaking to jaguar-racing.com after Eddie Irvine took the marque's first ever F1 podium with a third around the streets of Monte Carlo, Reitzle said: "You look at things like pit stops. Last year in every race we messed up a minimum one pit stop. Last year, Johnny Herbert came in once and they didn't expect him! That drives me crazy. That is just poor management. It's not only the technical side. You have to fix all these things.
"We are working very hard to fix the basics and now have a stable platform on which we can build for the future. We must stay cool, and don't expect too much."
For 2001, Jaguar Racing built a new management structure, with former CART title-winner Bobby Rahal running the team on a day-by-day basis and triple Formula 1 world champion Niki Lauda adopting an overseeing role over Jaguar Racing and engine-builder Cosworth.
Despite rumours earlier in the season that the partnership was not gelling, Reitzle regards the combination as a success.
"We brought Niki and Bobby together and you will see," he said. "We will work our way."
Like Rahal and Irvine himself, Reitzle believes the real test for the team's revised technical package, which includes significant aerodynamic modifications, will come at next month's Canadian GP.
"The next race is at a high-speed track, and it may already look different," he said. "Let's keep cool, because we have so much to do until we reach the level where we want to be, but we are no longer at the bottom end."
