Ralph Firman Q&A
Like the other 2003 rookies Ralph Firman has had a lot of adjusting to do to get the most out of single-lap qualifying this year, and before Spain it was suggested that his future with Jordan-Ford might be in jeopardy. However, he has put in some feisty race performances, notably in Malaysia and on the way to eighth place in Spain. Jordan has employed a regular strategy of filling his car up at the start, having done just that in Brazil, Imola and again under the safety car in Spain. Running heavier than much of the opposition makes life tougher, but the ploy appeared to pay off for Ralph over the full race distance in Spain. Adam Cooper asked him about his first finish in the points
"It was a great weekend from start to finish, including qualifying. That went well, and we decided to change from a three to a two-stop strategy, and obviously it worked out well. We had a good first stint, and a great second stint, and a good out lap and good first flying lap. Then I got held up by Ralf Schumacher. He wouldn't let anyone past, even though he'd damaged the car. I don't know why. I had Jenson behind me at the end. He was a bit quicker on the straight, but I think he had a problem, and he dropped back, allowing me to hold him off."
"The car was really good, especially in the second stint. I damaged the rear tyres a little bit in the third stint, trying to get past Ralf, so it was oversteery into the slow corners. But the car was working really well."
"Yes. There's only one rule, isn't there? Just don't take each other off! I got past him and then got past Justin as well, and then Jos pulled into the pits, so I had a clear run."
"Yes, it was an entertaining race. It's obviously nice to get past people, it's not nice to be held up, but it was an excellent race, and to score my first point is a real confidence booster."
"A point's a point! It's still nice."
"We had four days at the start of the year, but two were wet. So two days in the dry, really."
"Yes, it was two days more than most places, so that was great."
"Yes, it went brilliantly, and knowing the circuit helped a lot. You can attack from the first lap and start getting a good set-up."
"It's starting to come together, but I know there's still a lot more time in me, especially in qualifying. That's also going to translate into better race results. It just takes more time in the car, so it's going to take another three or four races before I'm at 110 percent."
"I've never been there, I've only seen it on TV, so I've got no idea at the moment. But I'm looking forward to it."
