Pre-Malaysian GP testing kicks off

There was a distinct Spanish flavour at Silverstone yesterday (Tuesday) as Williams and Renault embarked on a three-day pre-Malaysian GP test with Marc Gene and Fernando Alonso behind their respective wheels

Gene, who spent the day tyre testing, ended up comfortably quicker than his fellow countryman setting a best lap of 1m23.261s compared to Alonso's 1m25.927s - both drivers completed over 40 laps. The Renault test driver drove an uprated version of last year's Benetton B201, testing tyres and components for the 2002 car. Technical director Mike Gascoyne was happy with the day's work.

"Overall, the team had a successful day, with Fernando conducting systems and tyre testing as well as continuing his integration into the team."

BAR joins the test today.

Ferrari tester Luciano Burti drove the F2001 at Fiorano, perhaps a signal that the team intends to continue with the old car at Sepang. The Brazilian covered 40 laps evaluating Bridgestone tyres.

Meanwhile at Paul Ricard in France persistent rain failed to damped Jean Alesi's spirits as he drove a McLaren for the first time. No times were released from the test, but he is believed to have covered 45 laps, which was enough to make him ask for further opportunities to drive the car again.

"If it's possible, I would like to give a contribution to Formula 1 testing with McLaren in the future," he said. "It was a really fantastic day because I arrived at the circuit to find a McLaren with Jean Alesi on the car and it was very special because I have spent all my life battling against them."
