Nick Heidfeld Q&A

Sauber hasn't made as big an impact as it did last year, but the Swiss team has been quietly picking up points. Double scores in Malaysia and Barcelona were followed by a sixth for Felipe Massa at the Nurburgring, and once again it was in team formation as Nick Heidfeld followed him across the line in seventh. The German sat behind his team-mate for most of the race, and only just failed to get past after the pit stops. Heidfeld has been regularly outqualifying the much vaunted Massa this year, and was a superb fifth on the grid in Austria, but he's still being overlooked. Adam Cooper spoke to him

"Obviously I'm not so happy, because seventh is the worst you can have! It's tough, especially when you know that you know you are as quick as Felipe. But in the end I lost the race at the start. Felipe passed me on the outside, and that was it. Afterwards I didn't find a way past him. It was very close a couple of times at the end where he did some small mistakes, and it was very close on the pitstop."

"I pushed very hard because I thought that would be my best chance, and it was very, very close, Unfortunately just when I went into my pit position Williams let Ralf out, so I had to brake - otherwise we would have crashed. I don't know how much I lost. It was not a lot, but maybe it would have been enough. But there's nothing you can do."

"No. It was hard, but it was OK. You can defend your position."

"I think it wouldn't have made a huge difference. For sure I would have attacked a bit harder, but still I wanted to get the point, I wanted to be in sixth position. So I pushed also in the end. It was very close sometimes, and I didn't just follow him. I tried, but of course you always have to be a bit more careful."

"I don't know if our strategy was better. I have to look and analyse it, but it looks like they were really quick on lap times. He made a mistake once at the first corner, which is when we went by. I'm not sure if it was the right way or not."

"It's good for the team to score some points again, for sure. But the bad thing is that again Renault scored more points than us."

"I think it's very similar."

"Yes, but last year we were fighting closely with both Honda teams, which are clearly behind us now. Until now I think we are quicker. We were not so lucky in the races, or let's say we just didn't score as many points, but speedwise I think we are quicker."

"Last year we scored points with both cars - so I hope it's going to be good!"
