New bosses back cost cutting proposals
New Formula 1 team bosses David Richards (BAR) and Ove Andersson (Toyota) have leant their support to proposals for changes to the sporting regulations to ease F1's financial burden, while also advocating caution
"I think it's probably a good idea to try to limit somehow the number of engines available," Andersson said, "but personally I think that one engine for the whole race weekend is going a bit too far maybe."
Richards added: "I think it's a very sensible move forward. It's very clear that there are teams struggling at the back financially and we need to put a cap on some of the costs. It just changes the challenge slightly. I don't see why it shouldn't be received very well by most teams. You have got to think that an engine manufacturer now is looking not just at one engine, but also an engine for qualifying that you are probably going to throw away at the end of a Saturday afternoon."
Richards was less enthusiastic with the proposal to reduce grand prix meets to just two days by getting rid of the Friday sessions. "I think you can't look at that out of context. There has got to be a debate about testing as a whole throughout the year, you can't just look at Friday in isolation. But an overall restriction on testing would be equal for everybody and certainly make dramatic savings."
Toyota have signed a sponsorship agreement with pharmaceuticals company, ratiopharm, which will become the team's 'official health partner'. The TF102, which makes its racing debut in Melbourne this weekend, will carry the ratiopharm logo on the cockpit sides.
