Michelin not to blame for punctures

Michelin has said that there were no problems with the construction of its rubber in Montreal, despite Jarno Trulli and Kimi Raikkonen suffering tyre failures in the Canadian GP

Trulli's right rear tyre fell apart early in the race after he had been in a collision with Antonio Pizzonia's Jaguar in the second lap. The explanation was that the tyre valve had been damaged in the contact, allowing the tyre to lose pressure. Once the tyre gets too soft, the carcass moves around too much and breaks up.

Raikkonen's right rear disintegrated five laps before he was due to pit, having been put on a long one-stop first stint after spinning in qualifying and electing to start from the pit lane.

Heat durability is the biggest issue that the tyre companies have to deal with in Montreal because of the high speeds and heavy braking, but in Raikkonen's case the tyre fell apart due to a puncture picked up from debris on the circuit - most probably from Rubens Barrichello's left turning vane which fell of his Ferrari.

Michelin engineers discovered a large hole in the tread of Raikkonen's tyre when they inspected it.
