McNish disappointed to miss final GP

Allan McNish refused to be too downbeat despite being forced to miss his final grand prix for Toyota after the medical team at Suzuka refused to let him into the race

McNish took part in the warm-up, but Professor's Sir Watkins' team decided that the Scot was in no state to take the start after his huge shunt in qualifying.

"I was very disappointed not to be racing," he said. "Following yesterday's accident I rested overnight and I did the warm-up this morning feeling fine. As a racing driver, I would have liked to race this afternoon, but I accept the FIA medical team's decision and I am very sorry for the team and all the Japanese fans."

His team-mate Mika Salo, who bows out of the sport exactly eight years after making his F1 debut at Suzuka for Lotus, brought the Toyota home but failed to add to the team's tally of two points.

"It wasn't the most exciting of races to be honest," said the Finn, who came home a lonely eighth. "There was a problem with the final set of tyres, which gave a lot of understeer."
