McLaren trail Ferrari on Friday
Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard had a low key start to the San Marino
Grand Prix but are quietly confident they can turn their season around onSaturday and Sunday.
Coulthard, who won this race two years ago and was second last year, is
third on the grid and Hakkinen, yet to win this race, sixth after the first
day.
"The car felt good from the start and we have done a lot of testing on
various different set-ups so I'm confident Saturday and Sunday will be good
for us," said Coulthard.
Hakkinen, who did 33 laps, said his lap times were affected by the yellow
flags late in the session as he was zeroing in on a fast lap.
"We made a good step forward at the end but didn't get a chance to use it,"
he said. "Today's times do not represent the best we can achieve."
Team boss Ron Dennis added: "We have been concentrating on the race set-up
and therefore today's times are somewhat immaterial."
Neither driver has yet scored a point in the championship.
