Mark Webber Q&A

While Takuma Sato captured the attention at Suzuka, Mark Webber's identical result - fifth place on home ground in Melbourne - now seems a very long time ago. In Japan the Aussie had a low-key run to 10th, after running behind team-mate Alex Yoong for a while. The pair even touched on the first lap, fortunately without any lasting harm. Minardi boss Paul Stoddart has first call on Mark's services for next year, but Webber is still expected to join Jaguar Racing, although so far there has been no firm news on that front. Adam Cooper spoke to him after the race in Japan

"I had really, really low grip, and it was a really lonely afternoon. We went long with the first stop just to try to see what we could do with that."

"When [Allan] McNish pulled out Alex went to the other side of the grid, the clean side, and he had fresh boots and lower fuel. He was always going to outlaunch us, so that was a bit frustrating! He was pitting on the lap that he spun, and I was due to go a lot longer than him. It was very difficult to overtake. He had about 0.8s-0.9s less fuel."

"I've learned a lot. I should have been a bit more pushy on Friday with what sort of tyres I wanted and things like that, but I've learned a lot this weekend. It's a bit of a specialised circuit, so it was good to get some mileage and I look forward to next year."

"We've had a lot of really good highs, like Monaco and Magny-Cours. At the start of the year we outqualified some cars. Even up until Indy I raced some guys there. I'm just really happy for Paul. It's just unbelievable for me to get to the end of the year, because it's been a real, real struggle for us in terms of parts. Every race has been difficult!"

"I think in terms of developments I might be a little bit stale. After working at Renault, where you get everything at the forefront in terms of fresh mods and stuff, I might be a bit stale in terms of what actually makes an F1 car tick. We've got the same engine and fundamentally the same car since Brazil. So I am probably a bit stale on that front. But I've learned a lot in terms of racing and getting the most out of the weekend and how the track progresses. Things like making different decisions and being a bit open-minded about the whole weekend, what tracks need what, are obviously what you learn as a race driver."

"I think we will find out at the absolute latest in about three weeks. I hope it's sorted out by then. Paul's still got an option on me, and we'll see what happens."
