Mark Webber Q&A
Mark Webber gave Jaguar some encouragement by running in the outer reaches of the points in the first half of the Australian GP, until gearbox problems intervened and stopped the local hero, to the obvious disappointment of the crowd. After Christian Klein suffered a hydraulic failure and loss of power steering in qualifying it's clear that the team still has a list of issues to resolve. Adam Cooper caught up with Mark after the race
"It surprised us massively, to be honest. I think BAR did well, but I think there are a lot of teams underperforming. We're doing a good job with what we have. The guys are doing a bloody good job with the car. I'm doing the easy bit."
"I lost sixth and seventh gear. In the end I was stuck in nothing, sixth was just not there."
"The part that failed hasn't failed in the last 40 races..."
"Yeah, that was a worry. It's not good, but maybe we would have found the problems if we had done some more mileage initially, but the last few tests went very, very well for us. You always know there are new things around the corner for you. We'll probably find a couple more new things in Malaysia, I just hope it's not in the race."
"Absolutely, I'm always getting confidence with the engine. Going into the race today I was very confident that the engine was going to be absolutely fine. Christian's did the race, so that's going well. But it's always a balancing act again, how aggressive you want to be with it. You don't want to be cruising, because in the last 10 laps the engine is getting there in terms of mileage. It's all a compromise in terms of your laps completed and also how aggressively you want to run the engine in the race. The engines don't really go off, it's just that when they do go, they've gone, so we need to get experience with general mileage."
"The track was a bit cooler, but it was the same for everybody. We were very encouraged by the pace of the car. I would have liked a little bit more running on Friday afternoon in terms of engine mileage, just to do a bit more set-up work, but even so we did crack a pretty good set-up for the race. There's just a new range of understanding the car, the balance that we can play with to try and look after the rear tyres. The whole thing has been integrated together. We knew that it was a big weakness for us, so we're just trying to get the whole car kinder on its tyres. We think we're graining a little bit more than other people - just a little bit more, which we've got to work on. It's a big step forward. We're doing a good job, but I think there's a few teams doing an average job out there, to be honest."
"Maybe, yeah. Fernando [Alonso] looked like he had a strong race. Tyres are crucial, absolutely crucial. I think all the tyres are reasonably similar. If they were on the tyre I think they were on, I think maybe they got a bit more out of it. I think everyone else is in the same boat."
"I do enjoy it, but I'm very keen to get home and have a shower! There's only one of me, and it is demanding, let alone the fans but also the sponsors, the press. It's par for the course now when I race in Australia. I've just got to give them a result."
