Race due to start 7am BST

Formation lap- Jarno Trulli fails to start, pulling off in a cloud of smoke on the green flag lap

Start- Hill and one of the Benettons tangle in the background as Schumacher and Irvine hold the lead ahead of Coulthard and Hakkinen. Fisichella caused the incident and Hill is out of the race. Zonta spins by himself, as does Diniz

Lap 2- Schumacher leads by 3s from Irvine, Coulthard, Hakkinen, Barrichello and Herbert. Irvine under massive pressure. Wurz is 7th, then R.Schumacher, Villeneuve, Alesi, Frentzen, Gene, Zanardi, Takagi, Badoer, Panis, De la Rosa, Zonta

Hill and Fisichella are out

Lap 3- Schumacher's lead suddenly shrinks to 1.0s. Zanardi pits and rejoins. Schumacher slows and allows Irvine to take the lead

Lap 4- Contact between Coulthard and Schumacher in turn one, Schumacher sent wide, Coulthard goes up to second

Lap 6- Badoer spins after contact with Diniz. Coulthard is closing on Irvine but Hakkinen is still stuck behind Schumacher. Panis crawls into the pits with a smoking engine

Lap 7- Zonta spins again and this time retires, having gone off on his own oil after blowing an engine

Ralf Schumacher spins into the gravel and out of the race

Lap 9- Coulthard is now right on Irvine's tail. Schumacher is dropping back in third, then Hakkinen, closely followed by Barrichello, Herbert, Wurz, Alesi, Villeneuve and Frentzen

Lap 10- Takagi slows and retires in the pits

Lap 11- Hakkinen sets the fastest lap but is still not gaining much ground on Schumacher

Lap 13- Both McLarens appear to be coming on stronger now. Coulthard has a major look at Irvine into turn one

Lap 14- Schumacher sets new fastest lap

Lap 15- Coulthard slows and retires on the pits straight, Ferrari now run 1-2 again

Lap 16- Diniz spins by himself while chasing Frentzen, but is able to recover and continue

Lap 17- Hakkinen is pushing harder and putting Schumacher under pressure, bringing Barrichello along with him

Lap 18- On Petronas' home ground, Alesi is trying desperately to take Wurz for sixth position

Irvine's lead has now increased to 6s

Lap 19- Barrichello pits for his first stop as Schumacher backs off drastically to allow Irvine to pull away by nearly 2s per lap

Alesi pressures Wurz into locking-up and running wide, sliding through to sixth place

Lap 21- Hakkinen is becoming frustrated, waving his hands at Schumacher, who continues to slow the pace. Herbert is now catching the pair

Irvine's lead has now increased to 11s

Lap 22- Schumacher increases his pace and is instantly able to move away from Hakkinen. Villeneuve, who has moved up to fifth after Alesi and Wurz stopped, pits for the first time

Lap 24- Schumacher is now 3.5s ahead of Hakkinen. Barrichello has dropped off the pace somewhat. He is now running fifth and struggling to hold off Frentzen

Lap 25- Irvine pits for the first time. He rejoins after 7.2s as Schumacher sets a new fastest lap and continues to leave Hakkinen trailing

Lap 26- McLaren mechanics come into the pits ready for Hakkinen

Lap 27- Hakkinen has an 8s pit stop and rejoins fourth

Lap 28- Schumacher pits for 10.9s, rejoining between Irvine and Hakkinen

Lap 29- Irvine now leads by 5s, with Schumacher and Hakkinen seperated by a second.

Lap 30- Race order: Irvine; Schumacher; Hakkinen; Barrichello; Herbert; Frentzen

The latter then makes his pit stop and allows Alesi back into the points

Lap 32- Irvine leads by 9s, Hakkinen is now absolutely glued to Schumacher's tail

Lap 37- Schumacher and Hakkinen lap Zanardi and Gene without any change of order

Lap 38- Villeneuve spins on course and hits the wall, somehow manages to continue

Lap 40- Irvine comes in for his second pit stop, very quick stop, he rejoins third behind Schumacher and Hakkinen

Lap 44- Schumacher leads with Hakkinen tucked underneath his rear wing. Irvine is around 4s further back. Zanardi has been off the road but rejoined, Diniz has gone off the road permanently

Lap 46- Hakkinen comes into the pits from second place, dropping behind Irvine and Herbert. The Ferrari strategy appears to have worked to perfection, maximising Irvine's chances while simultaneously destroying Hakkinen's race

Lap 49- Hakkinen has caught Herbert and is now putting him under enormous pressure for third place. Zanardi makes a late pit stop, Villeneuve retires from ninth

Race order: Schumacher; Irvine; Herbert; Hakkinen; Barrichello; Frentzen

Lap 52- Schumacher slows and allows Irvine through to take the race lead

Lap 54- Hakkinen passes Herbert into the last corner

Lap 56- Irvine wins the first ever Malaysian Grand Prix, Schumacher is second, followed by Hakkinen, Herbert, Barrichello, Frentzen, Alesi, Wurz, Gene, Zanardi and Fisichella
