Klien hopeful of keeping Red Bull seat

Christian Klien believes he still has a good chance of staying at Red Bull Racing next year, despite recent speculation suggesting that the outfit will drop one of their current drivers

Red Bull's motorsport advisor Helmut Marko was recently quoted as saying that either Klien or teammate David Coulthard would be dropped at the end of this season.

Those comments have led to speculation that Klien is the one facing the most pressure, especially because Coulthard has scored more points and claimed the outfit's maiden podium finish in Monaco.

Speaking to autosport.com though, Klien has revealed that he has had no indication from the team that he is fighting Coulthard to keep his drive in 2007.

"I think there will be a driver decision in July or August," said Klien. "It is going around that one of us has to go, but they have never told that to the drivers. So I think everything is very open at the moment.

"I will just try and get some good results in the next few races."

Klien believes that the team's final decision on drivers will not be based just on the points situation - especially because a reliability problem cost him an almost certain podium in Monaco. He retired while running in front of Coulthard.

"If I had had a reliable car in Monaco then I would have finished on the podium and everything would look a bit different," he explained. "I don't think they can just look at the points. They have to look at the whole year and also look at the bad luck that each driver had.

"David has had a lot of bad luck as well, but there were three races this year (before Canada) where we both finished and in two of those I was in front of him. In the other I was behind. So far, it looks quite good for me as well. But this Monaco was a bit bad for me actually."

Coulthard himself is equally bullish about his chances of remaining at Red Bull next year.

Speaking after his points-scoring finish in Canada, he said: "I have made it quite clear I want to carry on racing for Red Bull. This is where I have been laying the foundations over the last year and a half. I want to be part of the team next year and I believe I will be."
