Klien gets Red Bull drive

Christian Klien has won the pre-season fight with Red Bull Racing team-mate Vitantonio Liuzzi to land the second race seat alongside David Coulthard for the start of the season, the team confirmed on Friday, but his position will almost certainly be reviewed on a race-by-race basis

Klien had been widely expected to land the second race seat, because of the race experience he gained in 2004, but only got the nod following weeks of intensive testing alongside Liuzzi and Coulthard.

But rather than have any long-term guarantees about his seat, RBR has indicated that Klien's position will probably be reviewed after each race. A statement from the team said: "The decision was made following the conclusion of the team's intensive testing program, which took place during the past few weeks and will be reviewed on an on-going basis."

This means that Liuzzi, who will be RBR's third driver for the start of the season, could find himself promoted into a race seat fairly soon if Klien does not impress.

Sporting Director Christian Horner said: "Fortunately we are in the position of having in the team two exceptionally talented young drivers, who have both impressed the team during pre season testing. I've been extremely pleased with Christian's and Tonio's development during the past few weeks, as well as by their professionalism and sportsmanship."

Klien added: "I'm very proud to have the privilege of starting for Red Bull Racing at their first race in Melbourne. I'm all the more honoured that the decision has been made in my favor - it's got me even more motivated."

Liuzzi's lack of race experience means that he is capable of conducting Friday testing for RBR, whereas if Klien is forced to stand down from his racing role then he will have to sit on the sidelines. He has competed in too many grands prix to be able to run on Fridays.

Speaking about the chance of becoming RBR's third driver, Liuzzi said: "I extend my congratulations to Christian, but I'll obviously be trying to get an opportunity to race myself as soon as possible.

"It's great to be with Red Bull Racing, Team spirit is excellent, and both Christian and I are benefiting enormously from being able to work with David Coulthard."
