Jones: Webber has got what it takes
Former world champion Alan Jones has confessed his surprise at fellow Australian Mark Webber's speed in Formula 1 this year, according to this week's AUTOSPORT magazine
Speaking exclusively to AUTOSPORT, Jones says that Webber's ability has exceeded his expectations.
"I hadn't realised he had so much talent," said Jones, who was world champion in 1980 with Williams. "I'd have given the performance balance between him and Pizzonia as 50-50 at best, or more likely tipped in Pizzonia's favour. Now though, I think Mark's got him.
"I've been very impressed with his driving," he added. "Mark has done as well in the wet as he has done in the dry, which is always a good sign. And he's shone in qualifying and the races too."
Jones has also backed Webber's decision to stay at Jaguar as "the right thing", and believes that the Australian can be a driving force behind the team.
