Jarno Trulli Q&A
Jarno Trulli was consistently impressive in Monaco, and was never out of the top five in any session. In the race he held off Michael Schumacher in fourth for the first stint and even led the race for a couple of laps at the first stops, but eventually lost out to both the World Champion and his own Renault team mate, Fernando Alonso. He finished sixth, still ahead of David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello, but a little frustrated nevertheless. Thus far this year Trulli has had a couple of fifth places, potentially good races in Malaysia and Spain having been spoiled by first lap tangles, but a good result is due soon. Adam Cooper spoke to the Italian
"Canada could be one of the Grands Prix where we could be struggling more than on other circuits, just because there are very long straights. That's the only issue. We know that our chassis should be very good on that track, but on the other hand the straights can cost you a lot of time. In fact Canada could be one of the worst for us, and on all the rest, more or less, we should be competitive. The car is performing well everywhere. Even in the worst situations like Imola and Austria we came away with points, so that was good."
"I think so. I think already for Canada we'll have a little step forward."
"For sure when I look back I'm missing these two or three races where I couldn't race or my race was spoiled at the beginning, and this could have made a lot of difference to my points and in terms of results. We know that in those races, Malaysia and Spain, the car was extremely strong. It's a shame when you lose the biggest opportunity of the season."
"We were a little bit disappointed with fifth and sixth places. We could match the pace during the race, but for some reason we weren't good enough. So it was a bit disappointing."
"Honestly, it was a very good weekend. The only bad thing was that at the end Fernando got past because of traffic in the pit stops. It was a shame because otherwise I would have finished fifth. But at the end of the day, it's Monaco, and we have to deal with it."
"I had a very good start, but unfortunately I was held up by Raikkonen. He had a good getaway, but then somehow he must have had a problem with his launch control, so he basically slowed down suddenly ahead of me. I couldn't go anywhere, because Juan-Pablo was next to me, let's say."
"It came out almost perfectly as we expected. We knew that we were very competitive in qualifying, and we knew that I had the same fuel as Ferrari, so I was expecting to stop as late as Ferrari. But then we didn't stop so late because I would have hit the traffic, as I was leading. So they stopped me something like five or six laps earlier. We could go for one stop with no problem."
"Yes, and it was nice to be competitive all weekend. We were just a bit disappointed because we couldn't match the pace in the race. That's the only point."
"It was exciting. I was ready to get away and I knew that it would have been very tight, on the other hand I had to wait for the lollipop man. That was my target! It was a good feeling that fortunately I kept David behind me. I didn't know about Rubens and Fernando, because when I stopped I lost all the gap I had on them. Fernando stopped three laps later, and when he was on the track he was maybe a couple of tenths ahead of me, and that was enough."
"What I would have done is stopped one or two laps earlier than what I did for the last stop. I was leading the group, and basically when you're leading the group in Monaco and you find some traffic, you're the one who is going to lose more. What happened is that just before stopping I hit a group of four or five cars. It would have been enough to stop one or two laps earlier, because I had 1.5s of gap on David and 4s or more on Fernando, and I lost all this gain. Then anything can happen."
"Yes, but what I want is not bad luck for them, but I don't want bad luck for me! I just want everything to go well. Sometimes you can get an advantage from retirements, sometimes not. At the end of the race it's up to you to make up the result."
"I think so. I think F1 showed many interesting numbers. We had very few accidents, a lot of cars finished the race, so it looks like we are getting more and more competitive and professional, drivers and mechanically."
"They have done a very good job. There's much more view into the first corner, and the Swimming Pool and Rascasse are a lot safer, even if at the beginning I thought Rascasse was going to be a bit hot, because you come so quickly. But it was OK, and they definitely made a good step forward."
"We did one day, because on the other day there was rain, so we didn't run to save one of our days. It was OK. We have some work to do before the British GP, because we are not looking extremely competitive. But we'll see. You'll never know until the race weekend."
